about

This summer (3rd July) Oslo based promoters and acclaimed record label, Det Gode Selskab will release their 2020 sampler on Bandcamp. The first in what is set to become an extensive list of contemporary annual samplers from the imprint. After several years of business, earning their stripes as a vital part of night culture in Norway, the tight knit set up pride themselves on their open minded, family-like community, a stronghold at the forefront of the gay and queer community in Oslo. Standing in solidarity, striving to educate and reignite the unforgettable history of house music and the avalanche effect it has had on modern dance music. An effect which should never be tarnished, but echoed time and time again. House music from the start, in spaces such as US warehouses in the 80’s, have always provided a safe haven for black, queer and alternative people, paving the way for the people of today, a space for freedom, allowing creativity to flourish.

Enhancing their strong beliefs, and what they strive to achieve as a whole, acknowledging the effect that disco, house, hip hop, funk, soul, jazz and rock has had on modern society, the sampler release will work towards donations for Black History Month Norway with 50% of sales in July being donated to them, going towards further operations and developments of the project.

Their journey so far has allowed them to build relationships with all the artists on board for the sampler in past years. Bringing them all together as one unit for this genre-bending release. The sampler scoots across tracks from familiar faces from the DGS back catalogue such as co-founders Karl Fraunhofer & Chris Solaris with their meandering journey entitled ‘Images’ and Tod Louie who delivers ‘Yalla (Let’s Go)’ with a murky breakbeat energy. Also, with previous turnouts on the label they have A:G with ‘Hardware Agnostic’ and Dandy Jack & Laila with ‘Komm Ink’ a quirky hip house vocal carrying the track. Berlin based Canadian, Mike Shannon closes the sampler with ‘Vidar’s Path’, he originally appeared on the imprint with a remix on The Eye EP (2019). The most recent vinyl release on the label came from Alexander Skancke entitled The Mouth EP (2020), his ‘The Dreamzzz’ sits comfortably on the sampler, a curious, analogue dance floor experience. ‘Grempel’ is laden with dreamy synth work from Robert Dietz.

The first outing from the label newcomers is FÆR (Argenis Brito & Felipe Valenzuela), ‘No Filter’ is a profound and thought provoking wander. Third attempt’s ‘Hacking Jazz’ is a creative combination of Jazz and modern day electronic music, an inspiring track made for the moments. Paying homage to trance and jungle vibes of the past is San Andreas with ‘Double U’. Dynamic pairing Foehn & Jerome provide a straightforward house groove, not to be underestimated. Entering with an infectious summer energy is Alex Jangle & MatztaM, seven minutes of pure bliss in ‘Dojo’. Young and talented German Philipp Boss delivers an ice cold arrangement in ‘Multicloud’, one for the dreamers. ‘Roboflop’ rounds off the newcomers from Philip Hinz, a rolling lo-fi trip. The aptly named ‘Let Freedom Rain’ is an inspiring journey from pairing, Trulz&Robin. An emotive, and drifting example of music led from the forefront by snippets of the famous Martin Luther King Jr. a relevant outing, standing for exactly what the DGS label believe in.

Transitioning between multiple genres there is truly something here for everyone to enjoy, whilst simultaneously supporting a great cause via the form of music. The respected Det Gode Selskab label conjuring up another exceptional release, standing in unity with an array of special artists for a fantastic cause.
